How to Maintain a Fir Floor

Having recently gone through the maintenance process I had no idea how quick and easy it would be till I actually did it myself. Whenever our floor needed cleaning we would just use a bit of Murphy’s oil soap and a damp mop that worked great for general cleaning. After about six years of constant use and repeated summer and various other parties we felt our floor needed a good cleaning. We started at about 1:00 pm with some Penofin Pro-Tech Cleaner in a bit of water. My wife went ahead of me with this on a mop lightly working it back and forth. I came behind her with a damp towel that I frequently rinsed with clean water. Where the heavy use areas had accumulated a bit of extra grunge I lightly scraped this off with a cabinet scraper. Prior to the cleaning I went over a few of the scuffed and scratched areas with a scotch brite pad that completely removed any signs of damage. After this cleaning process the floor looked very clean but had lost some of its original luster leaving it a bit dull looking. With lots of time left in our afternoon and some left over Penofin Verdi from the original application we decided to do an unscheduled re oiling. By 4:00 pm we were ready to sit down with a beer and admire our beautiful new floor. I was amazed at how little effort it took to make our floor look better than it ever had. It looked fabulous and better than it did when originally installed (which I did not think was possible), the warm patina that had developed over the years was now able to show through with all the dirt removed and the fresh coat of oil highlighted the subtle variations in the warm natural tones of the wood.
