Easy Finishing

Easy Finishing

The best finish for a Douglas-fir floor is an easy to apply oil finish. This simple finish that just brushes on then wipes off enhances the natural coloring and develops a beautiful patina that gets better with age. Minor scuffs and scratches do not show as there is no clear coat finish to scratch. An oil finish feels great on your bare feet and major scratches can be easily repaired, just sand the damaged area and apply more oil. There are several new oil/hardwax products on the market now that give great protection, they are made from natural ingredients that are good for the environment and do not emit toxic VOCs like other clear coat finishes.

An oil/hardwax finish is also suitable for an alder floor. The oil will darken the alder and highlight the natural character of this wood. For a lighter more even tone a water based clear satin Varathane is recommended. This low VOC product is fast drying and easy to apply, simply roll it on, a quick sand with 220 grit paper then another coat and the floor is done.
